At my cousin's birthday party last weekend...I took the opportunity to reacquaint myself with an old friend...a lifelong friend that has seen me through good times and bad and has always been there for me to hear me out whenever I had anything to say. Fun times reminiscing last Friday...we took it back to the old school that's for sure.

Thanks for holdin' it down, even to this day, Mr. Mic.

Nothing makes me feel more nostalgic than listening to songs that echoed throughout my high school days...songs that me and my friends used to sing during late night chill sessions or high school talent shows. All you needed back then was something to kick the beat like a beatbox or even the snap of someones fingers...and a voice. To all my homies that used to throw down with me back in the day with songs like this...thank you for some of the best memories in my life.

P.S. Thanks to my cousin Vic for posting the Coming of Age song - One In A Million on FB! Way to bring it back!

I think I learned to love jazz music by watching The Cosby Show. I just saw one of my favorite Cosby jazz moment episodes, The Cosby Show The Younger Woman, Season 1, Episode 22 where Cliff and Claire play my favorite jazz song of all time: "In A Sentimental Mood" by John Coltrane.

This is what it all boiled down to...the talent show. I am so proud of AJ because she rocked it! This whole experience motivates me to continue to do what I love to do, and that is to write music. It's rewarding enough to witness your work in the form of this...

Sometimes when the world seems like it's crumbling to the ground...something about the kids take all of your worries away. I like to thank God everyday for the little things (in this case literally) in life that make it worth while.

I've had better Mother's Day weekends throughout my life than the one that just passed and if it wasn't for a few of my little homies...it could've been a lot worse. Let me just recap why...

First up... my godson Jordan. Just look at him (pictured above)! Crazy cute...and so aware of my favorite color! All he had to say was, "Here you go Ninang! A Fwower seeeee?" It was over! haha. I've always thought of Jordan as the godson that most reflects me just because of his silly antics and socialability...maybe that's why we vibe well. And such a heartbreaker he is! This dude had 2 girlfriends AND and ex! WTF? He can be seen at the bus stop at school hugging on a girl while whispering "I love you" to her as they part for the day. Oh bro! Such a ladies man he is.

Next up is my ninja boy wonder-master story teller nephew/homie Jaylen. Don't let this sweet and serene picture of him sleeping deceive you...he is a fireball when he is awake! He had been asking his ninong (my BFF) if he could come to my house to visit and the day finally came. We made cookies, he played with the royal dog Tempo, played some games on the laptop, watched some basketball, he told some awesome stories, and topped it off with his favorite snack...Philippine mangos! Haha this kid is just so fun to have around...and not to mention a great partner to have while playing swords! Fun times indeed!

And last but not least... my protege, Miss Aysiah Estores. Ahhh a breath of fresh air. I'll let her talent speak for itself. We're just about done with her first song. The only thing left to do is bring her to The Beat Temple to record it like the pros do. Click on her picture to hear the full song! It's DOPE just to witness how much talent this little girl has. Or you can just click here to here AJ Estores singing, Daddy Says.

I sure do luuuhv them kids...

I happened to be at my second home, AKA the Estores residence, when Miss Aysiah Estores was coming home from school. It had been a week since I gave her the audio and lyrics for the song I wrote for her and I wanted to check it with her to see how she was doing with it. I know that she had a lot of school work since then so I wasn't expecting her to know the song at all yet. So I decided to put her on the spot by sticking my cell phone in her face as I asked her to give me what she had for the hook so far. I was pretty gosh darn happy with what I heard.

Check out the recording HERE.

Next on our agenda is to teach her to enunciate her words and give it more energy. She'll be good as golden in no time.

I was surfing youtube one night...like I had anything else better to do, haha! ...and I came across some videos of these Bay Area guys that are apparently pretty popular for their youtube videos. I guess I've been out of the loop but as I watched their videos, I think they are pretty darn talented. Sorry if I'm 10 years late with this information...but I say, better late than never. I'm sure there are more artists like these guys but so far, these are the ones that I've stumbled upon and have left a lasting impression on me with their musical talents.

To the fellas that I'm about to mention - if any of you, by chance, ever read this, let me just say...
1. You are awesome at what you do and please continue to bless the world by sharing your talents.
2. Holler at me. ;)

Here are some of my favorite videos:

Gabe Bondoc. He's unbelievable. I don't know him at all but he has me in a daze right now. I could spend the rest of my life listening to him sing. Sigh.

Jeremy "Passion" Manongdo. Another talented musician that I could listen to for a lifetime. This is a very sweet tribute song.

AJ Rafael playing some R&B classics on the piano. He's only 19!!

Leejay Abucayan. Dope beatboxing...I wonder if his mouth gets tired. In any case, he's very talented.

Blends & Trends Vol 1: Schoolyard Sessions
Just in time for Valentine's Day is the release of Blends & Trends Vol 1: Schoolyard Sessions, mixed and produced by Sir Kris, DJ Pete Rock from Mellange Studio and Big Rich of Clubworks Inc. It's not your every day slow jams compilation, but a unique mix of love songs and random grooves of yesteryear and today that they feel are timeless classics and presented in such a way where you'll keep wanting to play it over and over. Feel free to leave us comments, questions, and suggestions as they are already in plans of putting together Volume 2. Enjoy the show!

Props to the talented Arnelle Lozada of Hellagant Clothing for the clean CD artwork and Ed Pingol for the picture perfect...err...picture.
